As beautiful as they are, these reefs could   00:00:35.920 --> 00:00:40.960 be in danger. To keep them safe, we're  asking for help from the dive community.  00:00:40.960 --> 00:00:46.000 Hello, I'm Mark Craven, Manager of Dive Operations  and Dive Safety Officer at the Tennessee Aquarium,   00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:51.280 and I want to take a few minutes to draw your  attention to a problem that's ravaging the coral   00:00:51.280 --> 00:00:57.280 populations of the southeastern United States. Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease is killing   00:00:57.280 --> 00:01:00.800 corals along the Florida coast  and has spread into the Caribbean.  00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:04.640 The cause of the disease is  still under investigation,   00:01:05.200 --> 00:01:09.440 but we know that it spreads rapidly. Since there's a possibility that dive   00:01:09.440 --> 00:01:14.320 gear may carry this disease from reef to reef,  we're asking divers to take extra precautions.   00:01:15.040 --> 00:01:19.840 As divers who enjoy exploring reefs, we have  an obligation to help prevent this horrific   00:01:19.840 --> 00:01:23.280 disease from spreading to the Flower  Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary.  00:01:24.240 --> 00:01:27.040 Just like we wash our hands to  prevent the spread of disease,   00:01:27.040 --> 00:01:31.200 we can take a few extra minutes to disinfect  our dive gear after visiting each dive site.  00:01:31.760 --> 00:01:36.480 This should kill off any harmful bacteria that  could spread Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease.  00:01:37.120 --> 00:01:41.600 Here at the aquarium, after we dive an  exhibit, we take time to disinfect our   00:01:41.600 --> 00:01:46.400 dive gear before we enter another exhibit,  to help keep our marine wildlife healthy.  00:01:46.400 --> 00:01:49.360 You can do the same to help  protect living reefs in the wild.  00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:56.080 Before your first dive, and  again after visiting a dive site,   00:01:56.080 --> 00:02:00.880 safely and properly disinfect your dive gear by  following these instructions from our partners at   00:02:00.880 --> 00:02:06.240 Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary. Otherwise, those harmful pathogens may be   00:02:06.240 --> 00:02:12.826 transmitted between dive areas,  further spreading this disease.  00:02:12.826 --> 00:02:20.833 (Music) 00:02:20.833 --> 00:02:24.400 As divers, you're drawn to the underwater  world   00:02:24.400 --> 00:02:29.520 and the pristine beauty of these coral ecosystems. Please help be a steward of these reefs.  00:02:30.240 --> 00:02:32.800 Thanks for being part of the  solution, and safe diving!  00:02:35.040 --> 00:02:39.760 This video is the result of an Aquarium-Sanctuary  Partnership for America's Keystone Wildlife,   00:02:39.760 --> 00:02:42.800 supported by NOAA's Office of  National Marine Sanctuaries,   00:02:42.800 --> 00:02:47.280 the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation,  and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.  00:02:47.280 --> 00:02:51.067 The Tennessee Aquarium works with  Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary 00:02:50.080 --> 00:02:52.880 to protect the Gulf  of Mexico's marine species.  00:02:53.440 --> 00:02:57.760 Tennessee Aquarium is raising Flower  Garden Banks fish species at the aquarium,   00:02:57.760 --> 00:03:03.840 to perfect a methodology that may one  day help restore reef populations.
